Often what it comes down to is personal preference.
For me, I vastly prefer live foods to frozen. And freeze dried is on the bottom of the list. No particular reason why, but I feel live foods is what they would eat in nature, so that's what I feed them. I've had a few dropsy cases since january, but no other problems that weren't water related (water main break cause problems in the water). Since I haven't experienced any major problems as a result of feeding live, I continue to do so.
On the other hand, when I feed FD bloodworms, it seems like many of my fish end up with swim bladder problems (usually temporary).
The point is, find what works for you. It could just be that I'm better at regulating serving size with live blackworms than I am with freeze dried bloodworms. As for sterility- yes, freeze dried foods are sterile whereas bad things (parasites, bacteria) can come in with live foods (or even frozen).
As for serving size, I feed about all they can eat in 20-30 seconds. These guys will eat till they burst...
