or the filter, or other movement and they do not instantly disappear, water quality should be suspect. Heavy organic load causes not only the behavior this person described in GF but the bubbles on the water surface also. It may also cause foaminess on the water.

If you are looking for a water chemistry explanation you might try dan over on Freshwater (goes by liv2padl) who is great with the detailed scientific descriptions.

Or you could try Goldie over on the Acme BB's for more info on why a GF remaining at the water surface and creating bubbles (probably gasping) is most often a water quality issue.

It is always the first and easiest thing to change, also.

:So what exactly causes the bubbles? Is it just a function of excess ammonia + dirt buildup creating a film on the water surface which traps them? Do surface bubbles just sort of happen as a product of the fish's respiration and does this change when they are under stress? Do they appear with any fish under less than quality conditions?

:(don't misread me, I'm genuinely curious, as I'd like to keep goldies someday, I just know nothing about them, and you seem to know quite a lot)
