Reverse osmosis is a process used to purify the water. Instead of having purified water delivered each water change, I had a 75 gallon reservoir installed which has an RO system attached to it.
Here is a technical description "Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) is a state-of-the-art water purification technology. The process uses a synthetic
semi-permeable membrane to separate pure water molecules from dissolved and undissolved impurities. As unfiltered water (entry water) passes over the membrane, salt and metal ions are repelled from the membrane while water molecules are attracted to it. Particulate matter - impurities - are eliminated by the sieving process of the membrane. Extremely fine pores only .0005 microns in size filter out all solids. All that passes through the process into each bottle of Vital H2O is pure water."
Layman's terms - depending on the unit used, it takes all the bad stuff out of your water - chlorine, chemicals, salt, pollutants -- which you do not want in your tank.
Click here for a great diagram.
This highly purified water is then mixed with salt and then put into the tank.
Hope this helps ...

::Is it better than just mixing the salt before you add it to the tank?

: Hello tara, if you`re just setting up the aquarium you can just mix the instant ocean as you setup, but if your aquarium is already setup and this is to do a water change then by all means mix it days in advance for if you mix the salt to use that same day it`ll cause your aquariums water to be cloudy so mix in a pail and when your ready to use this mix be sure to not disturb the bottom for salt will settle at the bottom.
